How your exact age is calculated

Age in years, months and days is not a simple subtraction, because months have different lengths. This calculator counts the way people do in everyday life and on most official forms: it first finds how many complete months have passed since your birth date, then counts the days left over.

  1. Whole months and years. Starting from your birth date, it steps forward one calendar month at a time for as long as the result is still on or before the target date. Every 12 complete months make one year.
  2. Remaining days. The days between your last monthly anniversary and the target date are counted one by one.
  3. Totals. Total days is the number of calendar days between the two dates. Total weeks is total days ÷ 7 (with the remainder shown), and total hours is total days × 24.

Worked example

Someone born on May 15, 1990 who checks on May 14, 2024 has had 33 birthdays; the 34th is the next day. Their last monthly anniversary was April 15, 2024, so they have 11 complete months on top of the 33 years, plus the 29 days from April 15 to May 14. Their exact age is 33 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Month ends and leap years

When a birth date falls on a day that a later month does not have, such as the 31st, the anniversary in a shorter month moves to that month's last day. Someone born on January 31 completes one month on February 28 (or 29 in a leap year), not on March 3. This keeps every answer consistent: no month is skipped and no result lands on a date that does not exist.

Leap years add February 29 every four years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. So 2000 and 2024 were leap years, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. Because the calculator counts real calendar days, those extra days are already inside your totals.

Born on February 29?

If your birthday is February 29, it only appears on the calendar once every four years. In common years this calculator treats February 28 as the day you complete another year, a convention many software systems use. Some legal systems use March 1 instead, so if the exact day matters for a license or a contract, check the rule where you live.

When an exact age matters

  • Applications and eligibility: school admissions, exams, sports leagues and public-sector jobs often set an age limit "as on" a cut-off date. Put that date in the second box.
  • Retirement and benefits: pension and insurance rules depend on reaching an exact age on a particular day. The Retirement Calculator can help with the money side.
  • Milestones: find out when you will be 10,000 days old (about 27 years and 4 months) or how many hours you have lived so far.
  • Young children: doctors and parents often describe a child's age in months until about the age of two.

Age totals at a glance

The exact totals depend on how many February 29s fall inside your lifetime, which is why each row shows two possible values.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my age on a specific date?

Enter your date of birth, then change the "Age at this date" box to the date you need, for example an exam or job cut-off date. The result shows your exact age on that day.

Why is my age in days not my age in years × 365?

Leap years add an extra day roughly every four years. The calculator counts the real calendar days between the two dates, so every February 29 you have lived through is included.

How are February 29 birthdays handled?

In years without a February 29, the calculator treats February 28 as your birthday, so you complete another year on that day. Some legal systems use March 1 instead, so check local rules when the exact day matters.

How old am I on the day I was born?

Zero days. The count works like a birthday: you complete your first day at the end of the day you were born, so the next day you are 1 day old.

Is my date of birth stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your date of birth is kept only in this browser’s local storage so it is filled in next time, and it never leaves your device.
