Which image format should you use?

Every image format is a trade-off between file size, quality and features. The table below summarizes the formats this converter understands.

Reading versus writing formats

This tool converts images with your browser's built-in decoders and encoders. Browsers can open far more formats than they can save. Any format your browser can display can be used as input, which in current browsers includes AVIF and BMP. For output, every modern browser can write JPG and PNG, and almost all can write WebP. If a browser cannot write WebP, it quietly produces a PNG instead; the file list tells you when that happens.

What changes during conversion

  • Transparency. Converting a transparent PNG, WebP or GIF to JPG fills the transparent areas with the background color you choose. White is the safe default for documents; match your web page's background for graphics.
  • Animation. An animated GIF or WebP becomes a still image of its first frame.
  • Vector graphics. SVG files are drawn at the size written inside them, or from their viewBox if they have no width and height. For full control over the output size, use SVG to PNG.
  • Metadata. Re-encoding writes a fresh file, so camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied. If you want to remove metadata without re-encoding, use Remove Image Metadata.
  • Quality. Converting to PNG never loses anything. Converting to JPG or WebP is lossy; 85–92% keeps photos visually identical.

Picking a format, step by step

  1. Does the image need transparency? Choose PNG or WebP.
  2. Is it a photo going to an app, printer or form? JPG works everywhere.
  3. Is it going on your own website? WebP usually gives the smallest file at the same quality.
  4. Is it a screenshot, chart or logo with sharp edges? PNG keeps text crisp, while JPG adds blur around hard edges.

HEIC, TIFF and other formats

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Safari can open HEIC files, but most other browsers cannot, so they will be reported as unsupported here. On an iPhone you can switch the camera to Most Compatible to shoot JPG, or share the photo in a way that converts it automatically. TIFF files have the same limitation outside Safari.

Everything runs locally: your images are decoded and encoded on your own device and are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats can I convert from?

Any image your browser can display: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, ICO, SVG and, in current browsers, AVIF. Safari can also read HEIC and TIFF.

Why did my transparent image get a white background?

You converted it to JPG, which cannot store transparency. Pick a different fill color, or convert to PNG or WebP to keep the transparent areas.

Can I convert an animated GIF?

The converter keeps the first frame of the animation as a still image. It does not create animated output files.

Is it safe to convert private images here?

Yes. Conversion happens in your browser and no image is uploaded. The converted files also leave out the EXIF metadata of the originals.

Why is my converted PNG larger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail to save space. PNG is the right choice for graphics and screenshots, but photos are usually much smaller as JPG or WebP.
