How area units relate to length
Every area unit is a length multiplied by itself, so its conversion factor is the length factor squared. One meter is 3.2808 feet, but one square meter is 3.2808 × 3.2808 = 10.7639 square feet. Forgetting to square the factor is the most common area mistake, and it makes a result about three times too small.
Hectares and acres
A hectare is a square 100 m on each side, or 10,000 m². Its name comes from the “are” of 100 m², a unit introduced with the metric system that survives mostly inside this bigger multiple. Farmland and forests are measured in hectares across most of the world.
The acre began in medieval England as the land a team of oxen could plow in a day. It was later standardized as a strip one furlong long and one chain wide: 660 × 66 feet = 43,560 square feet. Since the yard was fixed in 1959, the international acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², or about 0.4047 hectares. There are 640 acres in a square mile.
Marla and kanal
In Pakistan and parts of northern India, land and houses are sold in marla and kanal. One kanal is always 20 marla, but the marla itself is not one fixed size:
- 272.25 sq ft is the traditional revenue measure (30.25 square yards). With it, 160 marla make exactly one acre and one kanal is 5,445 sq ft.
- 225 sq ft is used by many private housing societies in Pakistan, which makes a kanal 4,500 sq ft.
- 250 sq ft is quoted by some developers and in some areas.
The difference matters. A “5 marla” plot is 1,125 sq ft on the 225 definition but 1,361.25 sq ft on the 272.25 definition, about 21% more land. Before comparing prices or signing anything, confirm which definition the seller, society bylaws or land record uses, then select it above.
Worked examples
An apartment of 85 m²: 85 × 10.7639 = 914.93 sq ft.
A 2-acre field in hectares: 2 × 0.40469 = 0.8094 ha.
A 1-kanal house in square meters (272.25 sq ft marla): 5,445 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 505.86 m².

Tips for measuring a room
Measure length and width in the same unit, multiply, and only then convert. For L-shaped rooms, split the floor into rectangles and add them up. If your measurements are in feet and inches, convert them to decimal feet first with the Length Converter.
