What a cover letter needs to do
A resume lists what you have done. A cover letter connects it to one specific job. In three or four short paragraphs it should answer the questions a hiring manager has after skimming your resume: why this role, why this company, and what evidence says you will do the job well. Everything else is optional.
This generator builds that structure for you from your own details. It does not use AI or send anything anywhere; it fills proven templates with the words you type, so the facts are always yours.
Choosing a template
| Template | Best for | How it is built |
|---|---|---|
| Professional | Most applications, traditional industries | Four paragraphs: opening, evidence, why the company, close |
| Modern | Startups, tech, creative roles, email applications | Short opening, bulleted highlights, a one-line “why”, quick close |
| Entry-level | Students, recent graduates, first jobs | Leads with education and projects, then eagerness to learn |
| Career change | Moving into a new field | Explains the move, maps transferable skills, shows preparation |
The tone changes the wording, greeting and sign-off. Formal suits law, finance, government and healthcare. Warm works well for nonprofits, education and customer-facing roles. Confident is direct and suits sales and leadership positions. When in doubt, match the voice of the job posting.
Write achievements that do the work
The middle of your letter is where you win the interview, and it depends on the achievements you enter. Write each one as a single line that starts with a past-tense verb and ends with a result, for example “Reduced customer wait times by 40% by reorganizing shift schedules.” The generator turns lines that start with a verb into sentences (“I reduced customer wait times…”) and uses them as bullets in the Modern template. Our list of resume action verbs gives you strong openers, and the best results include a number: money, time, percentage or volume.
Personalize before you send
- Find a name. The company website or LinkedIn often shows who leads the team. “Dear Alex Morgan” beats “To Whom It May Concern”.
- Mirror the posting. Use two or three of the job’s key terms naturally. The Resume Keyword Checker shows which ones matter most.
- Be specific about the company. Mention a product, a value or recent news, not a generic compliment.
- Keep it to one page. Aim for 250–400 words; the live count above the letter helps.
- Match your resume. Use the same name, contact details and job titles, so both documents tell one story.
Mistakes that cost interviews
- Repeating your resume line by line instead of choosing your two best results.
- Leaving the wrong company name in a reused letter. Read the final version out loud.
- Focusing on what the job does for you rather than what you will do for the employer.
- Unexplained gaps or career changes. One honest sentence is enough, and the Career change template gives you the structure.
When the letter is ready, use Print / PDF and choose “Save as PDF” to get a clean, text-based file that applicant tracking systems can read.
Frequently asked questions
Is this cover letter generator free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the letter is built by a script in your browser. Your form entries are remembered only in this browser so you can come back to them; Clear form removes them.
Does it use AI to write the letter?
No. It fills well-tested templates with the details you type, so it never invents experience. You can edit every word in the letter box.
How long should a cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, usually 250–400 words, and never more than one page. The word count above the letter updates as you edit.
Who should I address it to if I do not know the hiring manager?
Leave the hiring manager field empty and the letter uses “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear [Company] Hiring Team”, depending on the tone. Both are better than “To Whom It May Concern”.
How do I save my cover letter as a PDF?
Click Print / PDF and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the letter is printed, without the website around it.
