Your PNG files keep every pixel of the JPG exactly. Expect them to be larger than the originals, because PNG does not throw detail away.

How to use the JPG to PNG Converter

  1. Drop one or more JPG or JPEG files onto the box, or click it to choose them.
  2. Each photo is converted to PNG straight away on your device.
  3. Click Download next to a file, or Download all to save every PNG in one ZIP.

Why convert a JPG to PNG?

JPG is the everyday format for photos, but it is not always the right container for the next step. Converting to PNG makes sense when:

  • You are going to edit the image several times. Each time a JPG is saved, the encoder discards a little more detail, an effect called generation loss. Saving your working copy as PNG stops that from piling up.
  • A website or app demands PNG. Some upload forms, design templates and print portals only accept PNG files.
  • You want to add transparency later. JPG has no alpha channel at all. A PNG copy can have its background removed in an editor and keep the see-through areas.
  • The image is a screenshot or a scan of text that you plan to annotate, crop and share as a crisp graphic.

What conversion can and cannot do

PNG is lossless, so the converted file is a perfect copy of the pixels in your JPG. It cannot, however, bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. Blocky artifacts or smudged edges in the original will still be there in the PNG; they simply will not get any worse. Think of it as freezing the image in its current state.

Conversion also does not make the background transparent. A JPG photo of a logo on a white background becomes a PNG of a logo on a white background. Use an editor with a background remover if you need the white areas gone.

Why the PNG file is bigger

JPG achieves its small sizes by simplifying fine detail and color in a way your eyes barely notice. PNG instead compresses with DEFLATE, the same family of lossless compression used in ZIP files, after predicting each row of pixels from its neighbors. That works brilliantly on flat colors and repeating patterns, as in logos, icons and interface screenshots, but a photo is full of subtle noise that cannot be predicted. A PNG of a camera photo is therefore often several times larger than the JPG it came from. That is normal and not a sign that anything went wrong.

JPG, JPEG and JFIF: one format, three names

.jpg and .jpeg are the same format. The three-letter extension dates from older versions of Windows that limited extensions to three characters. Some browsers save downloaded images with a .jfif extension, which refers to the JPEG File Interchange Format and is also a normal JPEG. This converter accepts all three.

Before you convert

  • If you only need a smaller file, PNG is the wrong direction; use the Image Compressor instead.
  • If the image will go on a website and must stay small, consider WebP in the Image Converter, which also supports transparency.
  • If the picture is too large, resize it first. Fewer pixels means a much smaller PNG.

Your photos are converted entirely inside your browser and are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG’s pixels, so it looks identical. It stops further quality loss when you edit and save again, but it cannot undo compression that already happened.

Will the converted PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG files have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove the background in an image editor if you need transparency.

Why is my PNG so much larger than the JPG?

PNG compression is lossless and works best on flat graphics. Photos contain fine noise that lossless compression cannot shrink much, so a PNG photo is usually several times larger.

Can I convert JFIF files to PNG?

Yes. JFIF is simply another name for a JPEG file, and this tool accepts .jfif files along with .jpg and .jpeg.
