How to use the Markdown to HTML Converter

  1. Type Markdown in the left box, paste it, or open a .md file. The preview updates as you type.
  2. Choose whether single line breaks become <br> and whether headings get id anchors for linking.
  3. Switch the right pane to HTML code to see exactly what was generated.
  4. Click Copy HTML, download a fragment to paste into an existing page, or download a complete, styled HTML document.

Features

  • GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks
  • Live preview in an isolated frame where scripts cannot run
  • Optional id anchors on headings for linkable sections
  • Optional line-break mode that matches GitHub comments
  • Download as an HTML fragment or a complete styled page
  • Converts in your browser, so drafts stay private

Markdown in a nutshell

Markdown is a plain-text format that John Gruber introduced in 2004 so people could write for the web without typing HTML tags. A few punctuation marks stand in for formatting: a hash starts a heading, asterisks add emphasis and a dash starts a list item. Because the source stays readable as plain text, Markdown became the standard for README files, documentation sites, static-site generators, chat apps and note-taking tools. A converter like this one turns that text into the HTML a browser displays.

Quick syntax reference

GitHub Flavored Markdown extras

The original Markdown left many details open, so later specifications pinned them down. CommonMark defines the core rules precisely, and GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) adds features this converter supports:

  • Tables built from pipes and dashes. Colons in the divider row set alignment: :--- left, :---: center, ---: right.
  • Task lists such as - [x] done, rendered as checkboxes.
  • Strikethrough with double tildes: ~~old~~.
  • Autolinks, so a bare www.example.com or URL becomes a link.
  • Fenced code with a language, such as ```js, which adds class="language-js" for syntax highlighters.

Line breaks

In standard Markdown, pressing Enter once does not start a new line; consecutive lines join into one paragraph, and you need a blank line between paragraphs. To force a line break inside a paragraph, end the line with two spaces or a backslash. GitHub comments and many chat apps treat every Enter as a break instead. Tick Treat single line breaks as <br> to get that behavior.

Fragment or full page?

A fragment contains only the converted content, ready to paste into a blog editor, a CMS field or an existing template that already has its own <head> and styles. A full page wraps the content in a complete HTML document with a title taken from your first heading and a small readable stylesheet, so you can open it directly in a browser, email it or print it.

Raw HTML and safety

Markdown lets you mix in raw HTML, and the converter passes it through unchanged, which is what you want for your own content. The preview runs inside a sandboxed frame, so scripts in the Markdown cannot run and links cannot navigate away. If your website displays Markdown written by visitors, though, always clean the generated HTML on the server with an allowlist-based sanitizer before publishing it. Need the reverse? The HTML to Markdown converter turns web pages back into Markdown.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavor does this use?

It uses the marked library with GitHub Flavored Markdown turned on, so CommonMark basics plus tables, task lists, strikethrough and autolinks are all supported.

Why does my single line break not appear?

Standard Markdown joins lines that are not separated by a blank line. End the line with two spaces or a backslash, or tick “Treat single line breaks as <br>”.

Can I use HTML inside my Markdown?

Yes. Raw HTML such as a <details> block or an <iframe> embed is passed through to the output unchanged.

Is the preview safe for Markdown from someone else?

The preview is shown in a sandboxed frame where scripts, forms and pop-ups are blocked, so viewing it is safe. The generated HTML itself is not sanitized, so clean it before publishing untrusted content.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, so drafts and private notes never leave your device.
