Electronic signatures in everyday use

A signature image is the quickest way to sign PDFs, contracts, consent forms, invoices and letters without printing and scanning. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act give electronic signatures the same legal standing as handwritten ones for most transactions. In the European Union, the eIDAS regulation says a signature cannot be rejected as evidence just because it is electronic, although only “qualified” electronic signatures, which rely on certified digital IDs, automatically count as equal to a handwritten one. What usually matters is that you intended to sign and that the signature can be linked to you, not whether it was made with ink.

There are exceptions. Wills, some property documents, court filings and certain government forms may require a wet-ink signature, a notary or a certified digital signature backed by a certificate. When in doubt, ask whoever requested the signature which methods they accept.

A drawn signature is closer to what people expect on a legal document. A typed one in a handwriting font is perfectly acceptable for many everyday purposes and is easy to recreate. Whichever you choose, use the same one consistently.

Tips for a clean drawn signature

  • Use a touchscreen if you can. A finger or stylus on a phone or tablet gives far more natural strokes than a mouse or trackpad.
  • Sign larger than usual. The pad is wide so you can write at a comfortable size; the result is trimmed and can be scaled down without losing quality.
  • Pick blue ink for originals. Many people use blue so a signed copy is easy to tell apart from a black-and-white photocopy.
  • Keep the thickness moderate. Around 2 to 3 looks like a typical ballpoint pen when the image is placed on a page.

Why a transparent PNG?

A PNG with a transparent background has no white box around the ink, so it sits naturally on top of signature lines, colored letterheads and scanned forms. Word, Google Docs, Pages, PDF editors and email signatures all support transparent PNGs. If a program shows a black or checkered background, tick White background and download again. The image is exported at high resolution, so it stays sharp when printed.

Keep your signature safe

Your signature is drawn and processed entirely in your browser; it is not uploaded or stored by this site. Treat the downloaded file like any personal document: keep it in a private folder, do not post it publicly, and only add it to documents you have read. To place it on a PDF, use Sign PDF, which also runs on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is a signature made here legally valid?

In many countries, including the United States, an electronic signature is accepted for most everyday agreements, and EU law does not allow one to be rejected just for being electronic. Some documents, such as wills or notarized forms, have stricter rules, so check with the party asking for your signature.

Is my signature uploaded or saved?

No. Drawing, trimming and the PNG file are all handled by your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

How do I add the signature to a PDF?

Download the PNG, then open the Sign PDF tool, load your document and place the image where you need it. You can also insert the PNG as a picture in Word or Google Docs.

Why is the background transparent?

Transparency lets the signature sit on any document without a white box around it. If your software does not support it, tick White background before downloading.

Can I draw a signature on my phone?

Yes. The pad works with touch, so you can sign with your finger or a stylus. Scrolling is disabled inside the pad so the page does not move while you sign.
