Why there is no single formula
A CGPA (cumulative grade point average) summarizes grades on a points scale, while a percentage averages raw marks. Converting between them only works if you know how your institution mapped marks to grade points in the first place, and that mapping differs between boards, universities and countries. Two students with the same 8.0 CGPA from different universities can have different official percentages. If your marksheet, transcript or university regulations state a formula, that is the one to use, and it is usually what employers and admissions offices expect.
The formulas in this calculator
CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE, 10-point scale)
The Central Board of Secondary Education in India publishes CGPA × 9.5 as an indicative equivalent percentage, a factor it based on the average marks of students in its top grade band in earlier years. So a CGPA of 8.6 is about 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. This formula tops out at 95% for a perfect 10, and many colleges with 10-point scales use their own factor instead.
CGPA × 10 (straight proportion)
A purely proportional conversion treats 10 as 100%. Some institutions use it, and it is a reasonable rough figure when no formula is given, but it gives higher numbers than the CBSE method: 8.6 becomes 86%.
4-point and 5-point scales
For a 4.0 scale, the proportional formula is CGPA ÷ 4 × 100, so 3.2 becomes 80%. Be careful with US grades: letter grades there are tied to percentage bands (a B is often 83–86%), so a 3.0 GPA does not mean 75% marks. Many universities and credential evaluators therefore do not convert US GPAs to percentages at all, or use their own tables. The 5-point option works the same way for scales that run to 5.
Custom formulas
Some institutions publish a formula with an offset, such as percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which is the same as multiplying by 10 and subtracting 7.5. Choose Custom formula, enter the multiplier and the amount to subtract, and set the highest CGPA on your scale.
Converting a percentage back to CGPA
Every formula here can be reversed: add back any offset, then divide by the multiplier. With the CBSE factor, 85% ÷ 9.5 ≈ 8.95 CGPA. Treat the result as the CGPA that corresponds to those marks under that formula, not as a grade your institution will issue.
Quick reference for 10-point scales

|---|---|---|
| 10 | 95% | 100% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 95% |
| 9 | 85.5% | 90% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 85% |
| 8 | 76% | 80% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 75% |
| 7 | 66.5% | 70% |
| 6 | 57% | 60% |

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by the factor your institution uses. For CBSE it is 9.5, so 8.6 CGPA is about 81.7%. If no formula is given, CGPA × 10 is a simple proportional estimate on a 10-point scale.
Is CGPA × 9.5 valid for my university?
Only if your university says so. The 9.5 factor comes from CBSE; many universities publish their own formula on transcripts or in their regulations, and that one takes priority.
How do I convert a 4.0 GPA to a percentage?
The proportional formula is GPA ÷ 4 × 100, so 3.2 is 80%. It is only a rough figure, because US letter grades map to percentage bands that do not follow this straight line.
How do I convert a percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the formula: divide the percentage by the multiplier, after adding back any amount that the formula subtracts. With the CBSE factor, 85% ÷ 9.5 ≈ 8.95.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is the grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average across all semesters completed so far. Both convert to percentages with the same formula.
