How to use the Instagram Caption Formatter
- Write or paste your caption, with blank lines wherever you want space between paragraphs.
- Keep Braille blank selected; it is the invisible character that most reliably survives. Switch to a dot if you prefer a visible spacer.
- Check the counters: up to 2,200 characters, and no more hashtags than the limit your account has.
- Look at the preview to see where the caption is cut off in the feed, then click Copy caption and paste it into Instagram.
Features
- Keeps blank lines by filling them with an invisible character
- Removes trailing spaces that can make Instagram drop a line break
- Character count against the 2,200 limit, including the added characters
- Hashtag and mention counts, with duplicate hashtag warnings
- Approximate feed preview with the collapsed “more” view
- Draft saved in your browser so a reload does not lose it
Why Instagram removes your line breaks
When you type a caption with an empty line between paragraphs, Instagram often collapses the gap, leaving one dense block of text. Empty lines contain nothing for the app to hold on to, and spaces at the end of a line can also cause the break after it to disappear. The fix used by many creators is to put an invisible character on each blank line. The line is no longer empty, so it is kept, but readers still see white space.
Which invisible character to use
| Option | Character | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Braille blank | U+2800 | Looks like a space but counts as a visible character, so apps rarely strip it. The most reliable choice. |
| Zero-width space | U+200B | Truly invisible and takes no width, but some apps remove it. |
| Dot | . | A visible fallback that always works and looks intentional. |
Each spacer counts as one character toward the caption limit, and the counter includes them so you are never surprised.
Instagram caption limits
A caption can be up to 2,200 characters. In the feed, only the first line or two are shown before the caption collapses behind “more”, so the opening sentence does the heavy lifting: lead with the hook, the question or the key information.
For years Instagram allowed up to 30 hashtags per post. In late 2025 it announced a lower limit of 5 hashtags per post, so this tool checks against 5 by default; switch to 30 if your app still accepts more. Choose a few specific, relevant hashtags rather than many broad ones; specific tags describe the post better and avoid looking spammy.
Example
Typed caption:
Sunrise hike, worth every step.
Trail: 6 km, mostly uphill.
#hiking #sunrise
After formatting, each empty line contains one Braille blank, so the post shows three separate paragraphs instead of one block.
Tips for readable captions
- Keep paragraphs to one to three short sentences; most people read on a phone.
- Use emoji as bullet points or section markers, sparingly. Find them in Emoji Copy and Paste.
- Put hashtags at the end of the caption so the message comes first.
- Write the caption in a notes app or here first, then copy it in one go, so it is not lost if the upload fails.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add line breaks in an Instagram caption?
Type your caption with empty lines between paragraphs, paste it here and copy the formatted version. Each empty line gets an invisible character, so Instagram keeps the spacing.
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and line breaks. The counter here includes the invisible spacer characters too.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Instagram used to allow up to 30, but in late 2025 it announced a limit of 5 per post. Pick the limit your app enforces; extra tags may be rejected.
Will the invisible character show up as a strange symbol?
On current phones and browsers the Braille blank appears as empty space. If you ever see a box or symbol, switch to the dot option.
Is my caption stored online?
No. Formatting happens in your browser and the draft is kept only in this browser’s local storage. Clear removes it.
