Where YouTube thumbnails come from
Every public YouTube video has a set of preview images stored on YouTube’s image server, i.ytimg.com, at predictable addresses built from the video’s 11-character ID. This tool reads the ID from the link you paste, builds those addresses and loads the images straight from YouTube. Nothing is stored on our side; the tool simply saves you from typing the URLs by hand. Because the images come from YouTube, the page needs an internet connection and shows “Uses live data”.
The available sizes
| File | Size | Shape | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| maxresdefault.jpg | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | Blog headers, presentations, reviews |
| sddefault.jpg | 640 × 480 | 4:3 | Mid-size previews |
| hqdefault.jpg | 480 × 360 | 4:3 | Always present; a reliable fallback |
| mqdefault.jpg | 320 × 180 | 16:9 | Small cards and lists |
| default.jpg | 120 × 90 | 4:3 | Tiny icons |
The 4:3 sizes are letterboxed: a widescreen video’s thumbnail appears with black bars above and below. If you need a clean widescreen image, choose maxresdefault or mqdefault, or crop the bars off with the Image Cropper.
Why the HD version is sometimes missing
YouTube generally creates the 1280 × 720 file only when it has a high-resolution source, such as an HD upload or an HD custom thumbnail. For many older videos, and for videos uploaded in low resolution, that file does not exist and YouTube returns a small grey placeholder instead. This tool recognizes the placeholder and marks the size as unavailable, so you can pick the next best one, usually sddefault or hqdefault.
Shorts and live streams
Shorts links (youtube.com/shorts/…) and live links (youtube.com/live/…) use the same video IDs, so their thumbnails are found the same way. Shorts are vertical videos, but their preview images live at the same standard addresses, so the same list of sizes is offered.
Using thumbnails responsibly
Thumbnails are part of the creator’s work and belong to them or to the channel that published the video. Downloading one for personal reference, to study design ideas or to illustrate commentary about the video is common, but using it in your own videos, ads or products can infringe copyright. When in doubt, ask the creator for permission and credit the channel. If you are designing your own thumbnails, YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio; the Social Media Image Resizer has a preset for that size.
Tips
- If a link will not parse, copy it again from the Share button; links pasted from apps sometimes include extra text.
- Playlist and channel links do not point to a single video. Open the video itself and copy its link.
- Private and deleted videos usually return only placeholders.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the maximum resolution thumbnail not available?
YouTube only generates the 1280 × 720 image when it has an HD source. Older or low-resolution uploads do not have one, so use the 640 × 480 or 480 × 360 version instead.
Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link and the tool reads the video ID from it. Shorts thumbnails are published in the same standard sizes as regular videos.
Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?
Thumbnails are copyrighted by their creators. Viewing and saving one for personal reference is generally fine, but reusing it publicly or commercially needs the owner’s permission unless an exception such as fair use applies.
Why did the image open in a new tab instead of downloading?
Some browsers or network settings prevent a page from reading images hosted on another site. In that case the tool opens the image directly; right-click or long-press it and choose Save image.
Does this work with private videos?
No. Private and deleted videos do not expose public thumbnails, so YouTube returns placeholder images or nothing at all.
