What a notice period is

A notice period is the time between telling your employer you are leaving and your final day of employment. Your contract, offer letter or employee handbook usually states it, for example “two weeks”, “one month” or “30 working days”. Employers use the time to plan a handover and find a replacement; you keep working, and normally keep being paid, until it ends.

How this calculator counts

Calendar days, weeks and months

By default the notice starts the day after you resign, so the date you resign is not counted. Two weeks’ notice given on Monday, October 19, 2026 ends on Monday, November 2, 2026. If your contract counts the resignation day as day 1, choose “On the day I resign” and the end date moves one day earlier.

Months are counted to the same date in a later month: one month from March 15 ends on April 15. When that date does not exist, the last day of the month is used, so one month from January 31 ends on February 28 (or 29 in a leap year).

Working days

Some contracts count only working days. Choose Working days and the calculator skips your weekend days and any holidays you add, counting forward until it reaches the required number. Ten working days from a Monday resignation lands on the Monday two weeks later, because both weekends are skipped.

Last working day vs notice end date

A calendar notice period can end on a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday. The notice still legally runs to that date, but your last working day is the working day before it. The calculator shows both whenever they differ.

Things that can change your last day

  • Unused vacation. Some employers let you use remaining leave during your notice, which moves your last day in the office earlier; others pay it out instead.
  • Pay in lieu of notice. Where the contract allows it, an employer may end your employment straight away and pay you for the notice period instead.
  • Garden leave. You stay employed and paid until the notice ends but are asked not to work or contact clients.
  • Negotiation. Notice periods can often be shortened by agreement, especially if your handover is well organized.

Get any change agreed in writing. When you are ready to resign, the Resignation Letter Generator writes the letter, and the Days Between Dates calculator handles any other date span.

This calculator is for planning only and is not legal advice. Your contract and local employment law decide how your notice period is counted.

Frequently asked questions

Does the notice period include the day I resign?

It depends on your contract. Commonly the notice starts the next day, which is the default here. If your contract counts the resignation day as day 1, choose “On the day I resign”.

What if my notice ends on a weekend?

The notice period still ends on that date, but your last working day is the working day before it. The calculator shows both dates when they differ.

How do I calculate one month’s notice?

Count to the same date in the next month: resigning on March 15 with one month’s notice ends on April 15. If that date does not exist, such as February 31, the last day of the month is used.

What is the difference between calendar days and working days?

Calendar days count every day, including weekends and holidays. Working days count only your working days, so 10 working days usually span two calendar weeks.

Can I add my country’s public holidays?

Yes. Open Public holidays and add each date, or add all US federal holidays for the years in your notice period with one click. Holidays are remembered on this device.
