How to use the PDF Metadata Editor

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box or click to choose it. Its current properties fill the form, with facts such as the PDF version and page size above.
  2. Edit any field: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer or the dates. Leave a field empty to remove it.
  3. Or switch to Remove all metadata to wipe every property before sharing the file.
  4. Click Save PDF to download the updated copy. Your original file is not changed.

Features

  • Shows title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates
  • Edit, clear or remove any property individually
  • One-click removal of all document metadata, including XMP
  • File facts: PDF version, page count and page size
  • Optional automatic “Modified” timestamp
  • Runs in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded

What PDF metadata is

Besides its pages, a PDF carries a small set of document properties. Readers show them in a “Document Properties” or “Get Info” window, and many use the title as the window or tab name instead of the file name. Search engines and document management systems index them, and they travel with the file wherever it is emailed or uploaded. PDFs store these properties in two places: the classic document information dictionary and, in many files, an XMP metadata packet, an XML block that newer software prefers.

The properties you can edit

PropertyWhat it is for
TitleThe document’s proper name, shown by readers and in search results
AuthorThe person or organization responsible for the content
SubjectA one-line description of the topic
KeywordsSearch terms, usually separated by commas
CreatorThe application the original was made in, such as a word processor
ProducerThe software that converted it to PDF
Created / ModifiedWhen the document was made and last changed

Why edit metadata?

A report exported as “Microsoft Word - final_v7_REAL.docx” looks careless when that text appears in the reader’s title bar. Setting a clean title such as “2026 Annual Report” fixes it. Publishers and job seekers set the author so a CV or e-book is credited correctly. Accessibility guidance for PDFs (WCAG technique PDF18) recommends a descriptive title, which assistive technology can announce. Keywords help internal document systems find files, although public search engines give them little weight.

Why remove metadata?

Metadata can reveal more than you intend: the name of the person whose computer created the file, the internal name of a draft, the software you use, or the exact time a document was written. Before publishing a document or sending it to a counterparty, many people strip these properties. Remove all metadata deletes the information dictionary and the XMP packet entirely. It does not touch the page content, so names or comments printed on the pages remain; review those separately.

About the XMP packet

When a file contains both kinds of metadata, some applications read the XMP copy and ignore the information dictionary. If you change the title here but leave an old XMP packet in place, those applications may keep showing the old title. That is why the tool offers to remove the outdated XMP packet when you save edits; the values you entered remain in the information dictionary, which every PDF reader understands. Note that PDF/A archival files rely on their XMP packet, so if you need to keep PDF/A conformance, keep the box unticked and edit the file in dedicated archiving software instead.

Tips

  • Leaving a field empty removes it, which is different from writing a space.
  • Dates are entered in your local time and stored with time-zone information, so they display correctly elsewhere.
  • Editing metadata does not change the pages, so it never affects print quality. To also reduce file size, use Compress PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the title of a PDF?

Load the PDF, type the new title in the Title field and click Save PDF. Readers will show that title in the window or tab instead of the file name.

Can I remove all metadata from a PDF?

Yes. Choose “Remove all metadata” and save. The copy has no document information dictionary and no XMP packet, while the pages stay exactly the same.

Why does my reader still show the old title?

Some apps read the XMP metadata packet first. Keep “Remove the old XMP metadata packet” ticked when saving so they fall back to your new values.

Is the PDF uploaded to read or change its metadata?

No. The file is opened and saved by your browser on your own device, so its contents and properties stay private.

Can I edit metadata of a password-protected PDF?

Not until it is unlocked. Encrypted files must be opened with their password in a PDF reader and saved without protection first.
