How to use the Text Reverser
- Type or paste your text into the left box.
- Choose what to reverse: the whole text, the order of words, the letters inside each word, or the order of lines.
- For whole-text reversal, tick Reverse each line separately to keep the lines where they are.
- Copy the result, or click Use as input to reverse it again another way.

Four ways to reverse text
“Reverse” can mean several different things. Here is the sentence “Hello world, how are you?” in each mode:
| Mode | Result |
|---|---|
| Reverse text | ?uoy era woh ,dlrow olleH |
| Reverse word order | you? are how world, Hello |
| Reverse each word | olleH dlrow, woh era uoy? |
| Reverse line order | The last line becomes the first; each line is unchanged |
Reverse text writes everything backwards, which also flips the order of lines. Tick Reverse each line separately if you want every line mirrored but kept in its original position. Reverse word order keeps each word readable and attached to its punctuation, so it is the mode for sentence puzzles. Reverse each word mirrors only the letters, leaving commas and question marks where they were. Reverse line order is the practical one: it turns an oldest-first log, chat export or list into newest-first.
Why emoji break in simple reversers
Computers do not store text as the characters you see. An emoji such as 😀 is stored as two code units in JavaScript, a thumbs-up with a skin tone is two code points, and a family emoji can be seven code points glued together with invisible joiners. A naive reverser flips those pieces and produces broken symbols or question marks.
Flags show the problem nicely. The US flag is made of two regional indicator letters, U and S. Reverse them separately and you get S and U, which some systems draw as a different flag altogether. This tool splits text into grapheme clusters, the units a reader perceives as single characters, using your browser’s Intl.Segmenter. Emoji, flags and letters with accents or combining marks are moved as whole units, so they survive the trip.
Right-to-left scripts
Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu are stored in reading order and displayed right to left by the browser. Reversing them changes the stored order, and the browser then reshapes the letters for their new positions, so the result is not a mirror image of the original. That is expected behavior, not a bug.
What people use reversed text for
- Palindromes. Reverse a word or phrase and compare. “Racecar” reads the same both ways; for phrases, ignore spaces and punctuation.
- Puzzles and games. Escape rooms, geocaching and treasure hunts often hide clues written backwards.
- Mirror writing. Leonardo da Vinci famously kept notes in mirror script. Reversed text read in a mirror recreates the effect.
- Testing software. Developers reverse strings to check that their code handles emoji and other multi-part characters correctly.
Reversed text is not a way to keep secrets: anyone can flip it back in a second. For playful encoding try the Morse Code Translator or Text to Binary, and for upside-down letters see the Fancy Text Generator.
Frequently asked questions
Will emoji and accented letters survive reversing?
Yes. The tool reverses whole grapheme clusters, so emoji, skin tones, flags and letters with accents are moved as single characters instead of being split apart.
What is the difference between reversing text and reversing word order?
Reversing text flips every character, so the words are spelled backwards. Reversing word order keeps each word readable and only changes their sequence.
How do I check whether a phrase is a palindrome?
Reverse the text and compare it with the original, ignoring spaces, punctuation and capital letters. If they match, it is a palindrome.
Can I reverse the order of a list?
Yes. Choose “Reverse line order” to put the last line first without changing the lines themselves.
Is backwards text a secure way to hide a message?
No. Anyone can reverse it again instantly. Use it for fun and puzzles, never for passwords or private information.
