What lorem ipsum is
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as stand-in text. It comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The familiar passage cuts words in half, drops letters and shuffles the order, so it looks like a real language but says nothing. “Lorem” is the tail end of “dolorem”, meaning pain. The text spread through typesetting in the twentieth century, notably on Letraset dry-transfer sheets, and later through desktop publishing software, which is why designers everywhere recognize it.
Why designers use placeholder text
When people review a mockup that contains real-looking English, they start reading and editing the words instead of judging the layout. Neutral filler keeps attention on spacing, hierarchy and typography. Lorem ipsum works well because its word lengths and letter frequencies are close enough to European languages that a block of it has a realistic texture, unlike repeating “text text text” or a single sentence pasted many times.

Use the Words option when you need an exact length, for example 12 words to test whether a headline wraps onto two lines. Each paragraph here has four to seven sentences, and each sentence six to fifteen words, which is close to ordinary prose.

Plain output separates paragraphs with a blank line, which pastes cleanly into design tools such as Figma, word processors and CMS editors. Tick Wrap in <p> tags to get each paragraph as an HTML element, ready for a template or a code editor. Sentence and word output is wrapped as a single paragraph.
When not to use lorem ipsum
- Content-heavy pages. If the words are the product, as on a pricing page or a sign-up form, draft real copy early. Layouts built around filler often break when the real text is longer.
- Stress tests. Real content includes long names, long German compound words and narrow languages. Test with the longest realistic text, not just tidy Latin.
- Accessibility reviews. Screen readers read lorem ipsum as nonsense, so it hides problems with headings and link text. Use real words when testing with assistive technology.
- Anything that goes live. Search your site for “lorem” before launch. Placeholder text left on a published page looks careless and gives search engines nothing useful to index.
