How to calculate a tip
A tip is a percentage of the bill: Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100, and the total is the bill plus the tip. To split it, divide the total by the number of people. For a bill of 85.50 with an 18% tip shared by three people, the tip is 15.39, the total 100.89 and each person pays 33.63.
Mental math shortcuts
- 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of 64.00 is 6.40.
- 20%: double the 10% figure. 20% of 64.00 is 12.80.
- 15%: take 10% and add half of it again. 6.40 + 3.20 = 9.60.
- 18%: take 20% and subtract 2%, which is a fifth of the 10% figure. 12.80 − 1.28 = 11.52.
Tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides in the United States usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. The difference is small on one meal but adds up on large bills in places with high local tax. Enter the tax in the optional field and the calculator tips only on the rest, while still including the tax in the total.
Tipping customs vary
| Situation | Common practice |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant in the United States | 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill |
| Bill already includes a service charge | No extra tip expected, or a small one for great service |
| Japan | Tipping is generally not expected |
| Delivery and takeout | Varies widely; often less than for table service |
Customs change over time and between cities, so treat this as a starting point rather than a rule. When traveling, a quick look at a recent local guide is worth it.
Rounding and splitting fairly
Splitting evenly rarely produces neat numbers. Round total raises the bill to the next whole amount and adds the difference to the tip, while Round each share rounds every person’s part up so nobody needs coins. The calculator then shows the effective tip rate after rounding, so you know whether you tipped 18% or closer to 20%.
If people ordered very different amounts, split the food first and apply the same tip percentage to each person’s subtotal. The Percentage Calculator helps with uneven shares, and the Currency Converter is handy when paying abroad.
Amounts are estimates for information only and are not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is common for table service, with 20% or more for excellent service. In many other countries tips are smaller or already included in the bill.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Set the number of people with the plus and minus buttons and the calculator does both steps.
Should I tip on the total including tax?
Many people tip on the subtotal before tax. Enter the tax amount in the optional field and the tip is calculated on the bill minus tax.
What does rounding each share do?
It rounds every person’s share up to the next whole currency unit, so nobody needs small change. The extra goes to the tip, and the new tip rate is shown.
Can I enter a custom tip percentage?
Yes. Choose Custom and type any percentage from 0 to 100, including decimals such as 17.5.
