Quick start:

How to use the WhatsApp Link Generator

  1. Search for your country by name or dialing code, or keep the one detected from your browser.
  2. Type the phone number the way you normally would. Spaces, dashes and the leading 0 are cleaned up automatically, and a number starting with + is used as is.
  3. Optionally write a message that will appear ready to send, or tap one of the quick-start messages.
  4. Copy the link or download the QR code, then test it with Open in WhatsApp.

  • Runs in your browser; numbers and messages are not uploaded

How WhatsApp click-to-chat links work

WhatsApp’s click-to-chat feature opens a conversation with any number without saving it as a contact first. The link has a simple form: https://wa.me/ followed by the full international number, digits only, with no plus sign, spaces or leading zeros. Add ?text= and an encoded message to prefill the chat box. On a phone, the link opens the WhatsApp app; on a computer it opens WhatsApp Desktop or WhatsApp Web.

Getting the number right

The most common reason a WhatsApp link fails is a badly formatted number. International format means the country code followed by the national number without the trunk prefix, the extra digit you dial only inside the country.

CountryDialed locallyIn the link
Pakistan (+92)0300 1234567wa.me/923001234567
United Kingdom (+44)07911 123456wa.me/447911123456
India (+91)098765 43210wa.me/919876543210
United States (+1)(415) 555-0123wa.me/14155550123

This tool removes the leading 0 for you, along with spaces, dashes, dots and brackets. A few countries work differently: Italian numbers keep their 0 after +39, and in Russia and Kazakhstan the domestic prefix is 8 rather than 0. If you type a number that already starts with + or 00, it is treated as complete and the country picker is ignored. Check the “WhatsApp number” line under the field to confirm the final result.

Prefilled messages

A prefilled message saves customers from wondering what to write and tells you where the chat came from, for example “Hi, I saw your ad on Instagram.” The text is URL-encoded, so spaces become %20 and line breaks, emoji and non-Latin scripts all survive. The sender can still edit the message before sending. Keep it short and friendly; a long block of text feels like a form letter.

Using the QR code

The QR code contains the same link, so anyone who scans it with their phone camera lands in a chat with you. It works well on shop counters, flyers, business cards, product packaging and restaurant tables. Print it at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide, keep the white border around it, and test it from the printed copy before ordering a large run. For other kinds of codes, use the QR Code Generator.

Tips for businesses

  • Use a separate prefilled message for each channel, such as your website, Instagram bio and packaging, so you can tell which one brings conversations.
  • To measure clicks from a website button, link to a page that redirects to WhatsApp and tag that page with the UTM Builder.
  • WhatsApp Business offers features such as a business profile, quick replies and catalogs, but wa.me links work with regular WhatsApp accounts too.
  • Never share links that prefill sensitive information; anyone with the link can read the message text in it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the person need to save my number first?

No. That is the point of click-to-chat: opening the wa.me link starts a conversation without adding the number to contacts.

Why does my WhatsApp link say the number is not on WhatsApp?

Usually the number is formatted incorrectly, often with the domestic 0 still in place or the country code missing. It can also mean the number simply has no WhatsApp account.

Can I create a link without a phone number?

Yes. Leave the number empty and add a message. The link opens WhatsApp with your text ready and lets the sender choose any contact or group.

Can the prefilled message include emoji and line breaks?

Yes. The message is URL-encoded, so emoji, line breaks and any language are preserved when the chat opens.

Is my phone number stored anywhere?

No. The link and QR code are created in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and only your chosen country is remembered on this device.
